If you need the link to the Banner Ads, please contact the AIIP Office at office@aiip.org.

Great conference!
Thanks to great planning, strong vendor support, and high energy from attendees, we really did get a “Rocky Mountain Recharge” at our annual conference in Denver. You can read about our Dress for Success campaign, catch up on the conference summary, and learn more about our 2013 award winners here.

Starting with the May 2013 President’s Update, we’ll be showcasing the products and services of our conference’s corporate sponsors. Stay tuned!

Mark your calendars now for “Chart Your Course in Charm City,” our 2014 conference to be held April 2-6 in Baltimore.

Winner of the AIIP conference banner ad campaign
We’re delighted to announce that winner Jane Langeman, Langeman Consulting, placed AIIP conference banner ads on 5 different websites. Jane’s prize is a complementary 1-year renewal of her AIIP membership.

Keep the banner ad campaign going
For those of you who in March placed conference banner ads on your websites (and elsewhere), we’d like you to switch over to an evergreen version of the AIIP banner ad. Contact the AIIP Office at office@aiip.org for file information.

Once you get an ad placed on a website (and make your own website the first place it goes!), send a link to that page to Susan Berkman (susan@research-ability.com). Susan will track ad placement through July 7, 2013. The winner of this phase of the campaign competition will receive a complementary registration to the 2014 AIIP conference.

Keep the buzz going
Word-of-mouth is definitely our best method of advertising the benefits of belonging to—and supporting—AIIP. We encourage everyone to help us spread the word via press releases, social media, and good old-fashioned conversation. A simple re-Tweet is one easy way you can make AIIP more visible.

Is there an information science, entrepreneurship, or other academic program or professional group in your area that needs to know more about AIIP? Would you be interested in talking to this group? We can provide you with a slide deck and other supporting materials. Simply contact Melanie Talley at office@aiip.org and we’ll get you started.

Our volunteers are the best
A membership association is only as good as its volunteers. Luckily,AIIP has excellent ones. To all new and returning volunteers, I offer a heartfelt “thank you!” For those who haven't yet gotten involved, AIIP offers variety of opportunities for you to hone your skills and get to know other AIIP members. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Volunteer & Leadership Development Chair Ken Watson at ken@watsonknowledgeservices.com.

The conference is here!

Are you ready for your Rocky Mountain Recharge? The AIIP Annual Conference is almost here! I’m really looking forward to April 3 – 7 in Denver, Colorado. The conference is where I recharge myself and my business, get valuable insights and strategies from experienced professionals, and reconnect with business and personal friends.

The program this year is terrific, with outstanding pre-conference sessions, great keynotes, and a comprehensive program tailored to independent information professionals.  Visit the main Conference page on the AIIP website for more information.

And lastly…

It’s hard to believe, but this is my last President’s Update! After the annual conference in April, I will be passing the President’s mantle over to Jocelyn Sheppard, our incoming President. I’ve enjoyed working with Jocelyn, and I know you’ll find her to be a strong leader for the association.

Personally and professionally, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President. I’ve had the chance to connect with many of you, and I believe more now than ever that AIIP is an association made up of extraordinarily talented and generous professionals. It’s been my pleasure serving you.

As always, thanks for reading the President’s Update. Please feel free to reach out to me. I’m always happy to hear from you.

Happy new year to all our members! I have a few quick updates to share with you.

New Vendor Agreements: WordsAnalytics and Fintel

Thanks to our hard-working Industry Relations Committee, I’m pleased to announce two new vendor agreements with WordsAnalytics and Fintel. As with all of our vendor agreements, AIIP members receive significant discounts on access to quality information sources. Check out the Industry Partners and Affiliates page (members only) for further vendors. Congratulations to Marge King and her team on these new agreements!

New Web Site

As you’ve likely noticed by now, we’ve migrated over to and launched the new AIIP website. I want to sincerely thank Debbie Wynot, Charlene Burke and the entire team that worked for many months (and in some cases, years!) in ensuring a smooth transition to our new look. We are still refining it, and your feedback has helped work out some of the bugs as well. Have compliments, comments, suggestions? Please submit your feedback.

Volunteer Spotlight

I want to recognize AIIP member Risa Sacks as our Volunteer Spotlight honoree in November 2012. Risa is highly praised by her colleagues, and has served AIIP in a variety of capacities for several years. In 2008, Risa was awarded the Sue Rugge Memorial Award for mentoring and helping other information professionals. Recently, she conducted a wide range of interviews (a specialty of hers!), conducted research and wrote an extremely helpful and timely report on issues related to where we locate our annual conference. Her work has translated directly into site selection policy being recommended to the Board. Read more about Risa on the Volunteer Spotlight page.

Audit

Finally, on October 4, 2012, Jocelyn Sheppard, AIIP President-Elect and I conducted the annual AIIP financial audit. The purpose of the internal audit is to ensure that AIIP has in place adequate financial controls, policies and procedures; timely communication of financial status; and effective mechanisms for risk assessment and mitigation. I’m pleased to report that the audit revealed no significant problems or concerns. In fact, we appreciate the consistent practices and thorough financial documentation maintained by Bland O’Connor and Melanie Talley of our association management firm, Postlethwaite & Netterville (P&N).

As always, thanks for reading this issue of the President’s Update. Please feel free to reach out to me. I’m always happy to hear from you.

Scott Brown

AIIP President, 2012-2013

The year is going by quickly. I have a few special updates for you in this edition of the President’s Update.

Pam Wegmann International Award and AIIP Technology Award

At the Internet Librarian International Conference in London, England, we were pleased to announce Heather Carine as the recipient of AIIP’s second annual Pam Wegmann International Award. Heather, a long-time AIIP member and promoter of AIIP membership, owns and operates Carine Research, based in Adelaide, South Australia. For many years, she volunteered as editor of AIIP’s member publication, AIIP Connections, and is an enduring proponent of AIIP membership both in Australia and internationally. Congratulations to Heather.

At the Internet Librarian Conference in Monterey, California, USA, I personally presented the 13th annual AIIP Technology Award to Tony Landolt, Sales Executive at Reprints Desk, for software tool Bibliogo. At the award ceremony, AIIP also recognized Datamyne with an Honorable Mention. Congratulations to both Bibliogo and Datamyne. Read more about AIIP's Technology Award, including the full press release.

Website Update

The AIIP website update is moving forward. The Website Revision Committee along with 10 K Webdesign continue the process of examining existing website pages, then migrating them to the new site. The committee will be testing the website initially, but, in the near future, will need the assistance of other AIIP members. If you would like to be one of our volunteer testers, please contact Debbie Wynot at debbie@libraryconsultants.com. Technical expertise is not required to be a volunteer tester.

Vendor Spotlight:  InfoToday

In this issue of President’s Update, we are trialing a new section: the Vendor Spotlight. In it, we’ll feature our AIIP vendors, highlighting what benefits they offer to AIIP members. Our inaugural feature vendor is Information Today, Inc. (www.infotoday.com).

Many AIIP members are familiar with Information Today, Inc. (ITI) – for its content-rich products and for the special relationship the company has long held with AIIP. Many AIIP members have authored and edited books and articles for ITI publications, plus attended and spoken at ITI conferences.

John B. Bryans, who runs ITI’s Books Division, has attended 17 AIIP conferences since 1994. “AIIP members make the best authors,” he says without hesitation. He pushes us relentlessly to unleash our inner writer. An amateur singer-songwriter and roots music enthusiast, JB encourages the musically obsessed among us to join him and his pal, AIIPer Mark Goldstein, in exploring live music when in AIIP conference host cities.

Marydee Ojala, another stalwart AIIPer, having joined the association in 1987, is the long-time editor of ONLINE magazine, and an experienced IIP herself. Marydee also develops the programming for many of ITI’s conferences, in both the U.S. and Europe. Her track record in mentoring writers and speakers from within AIIP is unparalleled.

Tom Hogan, Sr., ITI’s CEO, has for many years provided steadfast and generous support to AIIP.

AIIP at Internet Librarian International

Will you be attending Internet Librarian International in London, England this year? Then be sure to attend the after-conference get-together that AIIP will be hosting at The Albion in London, England on the evening of Tuesday, October 30, 2012. Several AIIP members will be attending, and all –- members and non-members, alike –- are welcome to attend. The winner of the 2012 Pam Wegmann International Award will be announced at the event, as well. More details coming soon.

Holidays, exhibitions, and new members

It’s August and that means holiday season for many countries in Europe. I know a few of our UK members are planning some time away from the office. Here in Portland, Oregon, there is no shortage of activities now that our weather’s not so rainy. In Chicago, AIIP members and SLA Conference attendees recently dealt with temperatures in the 90s and 100s, but overall seemed to have had a great conference experience.

AIIP enjoyed high visibility at the SLA Conference in Chicago in a variety of ways. Our booth was optimally situated at the entrance of the INFO-EXPO exhibit hall, so we had a lot of foot traffic and attendee interest in the association. Thanks go out to all the AIIP members who volunteered at the booth and promoted AIIP at the Conference! Melanie Talley, our wonderful AIIP office staffer, did an outstanding job setting up the booth, greeting visitors with a smile, and sharing AIIP benefits information with interested conference-goers.

Many AIIP members – Constance Ard, Mary Ellen Bates, Connie Crosby, Deb Hunt, Brandy King, Ellen Naylor, Chris Olson, Ulla de Stricker, Arthur Weiss, and I – were speakers and moderators at SLA Conference sessions.  I apologize if I’m missing some names, but congratulations to all of you, and thank you for being part of the public face of AIIP. I was also highly honored, along with fellow AIIPer Chris Olson, to be one of five newly-recognized SLA Fellows for 2012. See more about Chris’s upcoming conference-focused webinar below.

Our AIIP Event, held off-site at the Exchequer Restaurant & Pub during the Conference week, was also a huge success. Close to 65 people attended, including long-time members and those interested learning more about the association.

As a result of both our Conference booth and our off-site event, AIIP gained many new members. Welcome to all our new members! I think you’ll find great value in your AIIP membership.

Online London and Internet Librarian International

Due to changes in the venue and format of the Online London conference to be held this year, AIIP will not be exhibiting or holding its traditional breakfast. However, you will see AIIP at Internet Librarian International at the Olympia Conference Centre. We’ll be hosting an after-conference get-together at The Albion in London, England on the evening of Tuesday, October 30, 2012. We’ll have several AIIP members attending.  Stay tuned for more details.

With changes to the Online London conference, and per AIIP’s strategic plan, the Board is actively looking at other non-US conferences at which AIIP might exhibit in the future. I welcome any site suggestions you may have; please do send them to me at scott@socialinformationgroup.com.

Specialty groups – interested?

Membership Development Director Arthur Weiss sent a message to the AIIP list about the idea of starting local AIIP groups. The aims would be to allow members to get to know others in their local area, to have fun, and to introduce non-members to AIIP through in-person meetings. The format of such meetings would be up to each group. If this is something you would like to volunteer for and want to see happen, please contact Arthur at aweiss@marketing-intelligence.co.uk.

Vendor Spotlight – Reminder!

One of the most touted AIIP member benefits is our vendor-product discounts. Members can check out all of our Industry Partners and Affiliates at http://aiip.org/IndustryPartnersAffiliates. Our vendors are always happy to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

Upcoming Webinar – Trade Show Marketing

Chris Olson of Chris Olson & Associates will be presenting a webinar on trade show marketing on August 23, 2012 at 11am US Eastern Time. View details by clicking here.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me. I’m always happy to hear from our members!

Best Regards,

Scott Brown,                                                                    AIIP President, 2012-2013

What a conference? 26th Annual Conference, May 3-6, 2012 #aiip2012

“Great conference…lots of learning, networking & fun…fantastic…so very glad I chose to attend.”

These are just a few comments drawn from feedback about AIIP’s 26th Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana (USA) in early May. A strong set of pre-conference workshops, fantastic speakers, a terrific set of topics, and lots of networking opportunities made the 2012 conference another unforgettable event. A huge thank you to Conference Planning Co-Chairs Ulla de Stricker and Cynthia Navarro for putting together a stellar event, and ALL of the volunteers (http://aiip.org/ConferenceVolunteers) who contributed their time, effort, and passion to creating such a valuable experience.

I also want to give a big thank you to the approximately 30 members who submitted volunteer forms at the conference!
As this conference passes into the long history of great AIIP conferences, start planning now to attend the 27th Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado (USA), April 3 – 7, 2013! http://aiip.org/SaveTheDate.

AIIP Board Update

AIIP Board Update
As of the conference, the new AIIP Board is in place! I would like to thank the election committee, headed by outgoing President-Elect Marge King, and everyone who participated in this year's election. We welcome in our newest Board members:

  • President-Elect - Jocelyn Sheppard, Red House Consulting
  • Secretary - Joann Wleklinski, Wleklinski Information Services
  • Director-at-large, Membership Development  - Arthur Weiss, AWARE Competitive Intelligence
  • Director-at-large, Member Benefits - Susan Wald Berkman, Research-Ability

In addition to our newly elected Board, we welcome Marilyn Harmacek as our newest Treasurer. Lark Birdsong has taken on a full time position with a former client and can no longer serve as Treasurer. Marilyn was officially named Treasurer on April 2, 2012, and will continue to the end of Lark’s tenure (1 year remaining). Much thanks to Lark for her dedication and time, and appreciation to Marilyn for stepping into this vital role.

Cynthia Hetherington continues on as AIIP Past-President, and I am honored to step into the role of President.

AIIP's Latest Webinar - Managing Client Expectations Next Webinar

The latest AIIP members-only webinar “Managing Client Expectations” was presented on May 24, 2012 by David Kalinowski, President and COO of Proactive Worldwide, Inc. David discussed the different types of decision-makers one might work with, negotiating timeframes, and communicating with clients, among other elements of managing client expectations.

Learn more about AIIP webinars.

Volunteering and volunteer forms, and a final thank you

As many of you know, volunteers are the lifeblood of AIIP. Our members bring an amazing array of skills and passion to their work, to the association, and to the conference. Volunteering is not only a way to give back to AIIP; it provides an excellent opportunity to get to know your fellow members (and possible clients and subcontractors!), to develop new skills, and to raise your visibility in the profession. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact the office at office@aiip.org and request a form.

Finally, I want to say thank you again to everyone who attended the Conference – as a speaker, planner, presenter, exhibitor, sponsor, volunteer, or attendee. The Conference simply would not have been the outstanding experience it was without your participation, time, effort, and passion. It was an extraordinary kickoff to what I hope will be another great year for AIIP!

Best Regards,

Scott Brown,                                                                    AIIP President, 2012-2013
