Joyce Ward, the Roger Summit Lecture speaker for this year's Annual Conference, agreed to give her presentation virtually. As information retrieval systems evolve to become more interactive, conversational, and pervasive, the insight of the information professional remains crucial to their success. Search has moved beyond performing fast lookups within massive indexes: search engines now aim to understand the user’s intent, not just their words; and to leverage knowledge, not just text, within content. To succeed, search systems require a scaffolding of knowledge guided by ‘humans in the loop’. Joyce Ward will explore the ways information professionals contribute vocabulary, knowledge structures, golden data, and - importantly - their judgment in determining what constitutes a good answer to a user’s question.
